Brian Cody’s formidable Kilkenny side are within striking distance of Cork’s four-in-a-row All-Ireland record, set in 1941-44. Unlike in recent years the champions will have a battle on their hands.

Tipperary emerged last year with a first Munster title in seven years and pushed Kilkenny all the way through extra time in May’s National League final – a pulsating match that many saw as a dress rehearsal for September.

But this is an historic year in other ways. The Leinster championship will for the first time feature counties from other provinces with Galway and Antrim in the starting line-up. Galway are also strong challengers and the draw places them on course to face Kilkenny in the provincial semi-final.

As ever, Munster provides much of the early box-office appeal with old rivals Cork and Tipperary opening proceedings in May. Cork have a new manager in former All-Ireland winner Denis Walsh and the motivation of another battle with their county board behind them. Waterford are back after the stark experience of taking on the full force of Kilkenny’s 2008 All-Ireland final display, widely acknowledged as one of the greatest in history.

No championship is predictable and Liam 09 records the twists and turns of a fascinating summer, culminating in one of the great All-Ireland finals of modern times.
