In The Name Of The Fada - Des Bishop
As a native New Yorker, Des Bishop moved to Ireland in his mid-teens, thereby exempt from learning gaeilge at school. He has since carved out a highly successful career in stand up comedy in Ireland, and has two acclaimed RTÉ TV series under his belt, ‘The Des Bishop Work Experience’(2004) and ‘Joy in the Hood’ (2006). In spite of his assimilation, Des always felt he lacked a rite of passage in Ireland, because of his complete ignorance of the Irish language. So Des swapped ‘immersion heating’ for immersion learning and based himself in Leitir Moir in Connemara for 12months to learn the language from scratch.
Des takes the narrator’s seat for this hilarious sixpart reality TV series. Des discovers the joys of having a Bean an ti, struggles to get his head around grammar and sits the leaving cert oral Irish exam all in preparation for his gig as gaeilge. His ultimate challenge is to reclaim the tradition of seanchai in its modern incarnation – stand up comedy – through the medium of its native tongue.
Prepare yourself for some fresh and highly provocative comedy as Des brings to life his newfound passion for Gaeilge with unparalleled energy and comic brilliance.
