2008 was the year Padraig Harrington joined a unique club when he successfully defended his Open Championship crown.

Played in gusting winds and, for the most part, driving rain, Royal Birkdale provided the sternest of Open Championship tests.

With Tiger Woods absent through injury the spotlight switched to former world number one, Greg Norman. At 53 years of age the Great White Shark delighted the huge galleries and in round 4, with just nine holes to play, his name topped the leaderboard. But after a brilliant display of fortitude and patience, Harrington prevailed. His unforgetable second to the 71st hole was the shot of the Championship (possibly the year) and sealed the title for the Irish star.

The 2008 Open will be remembered for thrilling final round charges by Ian Poulter and Henrik Stenson as Norman's challenge slipped away.
