GAA Football 2010 - 4 Best Matches

GAA Football 2010 - 4 Best Matches

The 2010 GAA Football All Ireland Senior Championship threw up some of the most compelling matches of the last decade. The traditional powerhouses were toppled, promising newcomers found form and we had a novel pairing in the final.   For this DVD we have chosen 4 of the most nail biting battles – 4 games that made 2010 one of the most remarkable seasons in Gaelic football.

DOUBLE DVD - 4 full length matches - all the drama
Disc 1 –  Leinster Final Meath v Louth
All Ireland Quarter Final Dublin v Tyrone
Disc 2 – All Ireland Semi-Final Down v Kildare
All Ireland Semi-Final Cork v Dublin

(Note the All Ireland Final, Cork v Down, is available separately on DVD)

The Leinster Championship decider between Meath and Louth created the greatest controversy and headlines. Louth, appearing in the final for the first time since 1960, were a point ahead in the dying seconds only to be robbed by Joe Sheridan’s 74 minute goal that never was – controversial, much debated but ultimately heartbreak.

2010 saw the dawning of a new era for the Dubs, under Pat Gilroy. After losing to Meath in Leinster, Dublin battled through the qualifiers and were drawn against Tyrone in the quarterfinal – a match that was the ultimate in “eagerly anticipated”, and it didn’t disappoint. Few would have expected Tyrone to be out of contention before September, but Dublin’s payback day was nigh!

When James McCartan’s Down knocked the 2009 All Ireland Champions, Kerry, out at the quarter final stages the 2010 Championship was wide open, not least for Down themselves. Next up was a semi-final meeting with Kieran McGeaney’s Kildare. It was no coincidence that the Lilywhites dealt so well with qualifying games against a succession of sturdy Ulster sides but in this enthralling semi-final clash they were minus their ‘gameplayer in chief’.

The semi final between Cork and Dublin drew one of the highest TV ratings during the season. Cork had yet to prove why they were one of the favourites to win Sam in 2010. By contrast, Dublin had recovered well from their defeat in Leinster and confidence was high after disposing of Tyrone. Dublin v Cork is a traditional grudge match, but for many Rebels, that one point winning margin over the Metropolitans is up there with the result of the final itself.

So 4 matches that defined the 2010 football championship and led to a novel All Ireland Final between Cork and Down (separately available on DVD). It was a memorable year - enjoy.
