GAA Classic 2: The Passion Plays - Munster Hurling 1994-2004
The Munster Hurling Final is one of the biggest days in Irish sport and captures the imagination of GAA fans across the world. There are many memorable games, magnificent teams and classic moments surrounding the Munster Hurling Final down through the years but the recent era starting in the early 1990’s was really unique. It was a period of intense competition when Clare, Cork, Limerick, Tipperary and Waterford succeeded in capturing the prized title of Munster Hurling Champions. It marked a breakthrough (resurrection) for the traditionally supporting cast of Limerick, Clare and Waterford and created new hurling stars, introduced new managers, innovative training and memorable finals.
‘Even though we also went on to win the All-Ireland, the day we all point to, and we all remember, was the Munster final victory,” said Clare captain Anthony Daly of 1995, the memorable year of the county’s first title in 63 years. Waterford’s failures too were soon forgotten after brilliants wins in both 2002 and 2004 – a classic against Cork which in included in full as a bonus DVD.
But Cork and Tipperary hadn’t disappeared and both responded to the challenges of Clare, Limerick and Waterford. This DVD tells the story of how this fascinating period unfolded in all its intense rivalry, contrasting style and exceptional hurling.
