Mayo 0-13 : Galway 0-12

NOTE – Commentary is in Irish
The unusual pairing of the kingpins and great rivals of Connacht football added some extra spice to the 2001 National League Final.
Mayo hadn’t won a league title in over 30 years, back in 1970, while Galway had last won a title 20 years earlier, in 1981. Of the two, Galway were enjoying the more successful era under the management of a Mayo man, John O’Mahony, and were regarded as the more experienced team heading for Croke Park. Pat Holmes, had rejuvenated the Mayo team since taking over in 1999, successfully steering them through the league rounds and qualifying for the final with a league semi-final win over their other arch rivals, Roscommon.
So, it’s end of April 2001, it’s Galway v Mayo in Croke Park and as always there is more than just the league title up for grabs - there is pride at stake.
